Rizal Theater in Makati.

It was one of the classier cinemas in the late 60s, 70s and 80s. It later closed down in the late 80s due to fierce competition. People started going to malls to see a movie instead. In the late 90s it was torn down. The site where Rizal Theater used to be is now 6750 Ayala.

Vividly illustrating the condition of burned-out, battle-scarred Manila, as U.S. engineers and thousands of Filipinos begin the huge task of reconstruction, is this aerial view looking southwest across the Pasig River toward hulks of sunken ships in the harbor. Tall building, left foreground, is gutted, Eastern Hotel, center, across river, is burned out, general post office, extreme left, across river is Metropolitan Opera House in ruins. Battered wall of Intramuros, Walled City, and destroyed buildings inside, occupies rectangular area beyond post office. Left is demolished Santa Cross Bridge, repaired by Army engineers. The streets have already been cleared of rubble.

This is in Makati, That’s the old IBM building and beside it was the old RCPI bldg. This picture was taken in the area where Manila Penn now stands. I’m sure, my dad use to work for IBM.)

By RMN: The lovely building on the far right is the Dona Narcisa de Leon (yes, Dona Sisang of LVN) Building designed by Gabriel Formoso that has long since been torn-down in favor of the Equitable-PCI Bank Tower.

Power-Mad: That would be from left, IBM ; RCPI and the Dona Narcisa de Leon Building. Doinks didn’t specify if IBM and RCPI were just tenants and if these are the actual names of the buildings themselves.

Yes these were the days… growing up im Manila I witnessed most of the changes from the late 50’s to the 80’s. I remember when Avenida Rizal was lines with huge Acacia trees and most of the side streets were dirt road but never the less clean and swept everyday. Antipolo Street which is parallel to the railroad in Blumentritt was filled with Sampaguita from Avenida to Abad Santos and if you cut through the iskenintas and halimuyak ng Rosal or Dama de Noche just lingers. YEBA!

im a 70s baby and looking at the pixs of manila during that period makes me sad and happy. ma drama nga talaga ang pinagdaan nating mga pinoy.

some would say its no use reliving the past kasi nga tapos na but some looked at it in a different angle. as one writer puts it-people tend to be fascinated with the past because it makes them in a sense immortal by reliving the past in their psyche and connect it with the present thus creating a bridge of prolonged lives longer than what they should be…

Regarding the name of the bldg in Makati… Hammer Cuayo was correct… That’s Sarmiento Building. My mom used to work there. I also frequented that bldg bec once my classes in a Makati school for girls were over, I would go to my mom’s office.
Seeing your pictures of the Automat, IBM/ RCPI and esp of Rizal Theater brought back memories! Yes, Shangrila Makati stands on the same spot where RT used to be. On the right side of Rizal Theater was a building which housed Alemar’s Bookstore, Dulcinea and Anson’s Emporium, among others. Alemar’s was a popular bookstore then. For sure, those in their 40’s are familiar with Alemar’s. =)

Manila is really clean and beautiful before. You can see there are no vendors in the sidewalks and no litters in the streets. Although squatters may be just around but they are not manifested in the city streets. Unlike Ayala Center now, when you see vendors or children playing in the busy Makati business district you are sure there are squatters living somewhere near.

ANG PINAKA-CULPRIT SA PAGPANGIT NG MANILA IS UNG LRT-1. PINATAY NYAN ANG MGA NEGOSYO ALONG TAFT AND RIZAL AVE. WHICH WERE ONCE PRIME PROPERTIES. ANG USOK NG MGA SASAKYAN AY NATA-TRAPPED SA ILALIM NG LRT AND NEARBY BUILDINGS KAYA UNG MGA OFFICES THAT USED TO BE IN THOSE AREAS AY NAGLIPATAN TULOY SA MAKATI DAHIL DUMILIM AT DUMUMI NA SA TAFT AND RIZAL. NGAYON, ANDUDUMI NA NG MGA BUILDINGS NA YAN KASE SAYANG LANG UNG GAGASTUSIN NG MGA OWNERS TO RENOVATE AND CLEAN THEM DAHIL DI NA RIN SILA KIKITA BECAUSE WALA NANG GUSTONG RUMENTA. AT DI PA NADALA ANG GOBYERNO, NAGTAYO PA TALAGA NG MRT (LRT-2) AND LRT-3. UNG CROSSING SA MANDALUYONG (SHAW BLVD. AND EDSA) NA MALIWANAG NUON, ANDILIM AT ANDUMI NA RIN NGAYON. SAME WITH MAGSAYSAY BLVD. AND CM RECTO NA BIKTIMA NAMAN NG LRT-3.

  103. Jhune Says:

UNG MGA STAND-ALONE CINEMAS NAMAN SA BUONG METRO MANILA AY PINATAY NAMAN NG MGA MALLS. UNG GENERATION NGAYON, DI NA NILA NARANASAN MANOOD SA MOVIE THEATERS. PAG SINABING SINE ANG TANGING ALAM LANG NILA AY SINEHAN SA LOOB NG MALLS. AND YUNG MGA SMALL TIME DEPT. STORES AY PINATAY DIN NG MGA MALLS, THE LATEST VICTIM I THINK IS UNG PLAZA FAIR SA PLAZA LACSON.
